Sakura's Guide for Online Safety for Kids (and Adults, too!)
The Internet can be a very useful tool for learning and exploring, doing homework, and meeting new friends, but there are some dangers involved in surfing the net. Sometimes, people feel more secure than they should because they are behind a screen name or email address. The truth is the Internet has just as many dangers as the world outside your window - they just aren't always as apparent. Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are surfing the web; remember these to help keep yourself and those around you safe for harm:
- Never give out your personal information such as your real full name, your address, your picture, phone number, school name, parent's name, or workplace without permission from your parent or guardian.
- Do not give out any of your passwords or information about your computer.
- It is okay if you make a mistake. If you feel like you might have done something you shouldn't have, it is best to let someone know and apologize. It is always safer to know just in case.
- Meeting friends online can be fun! However, even if you have been talking with someone for months, seen their picture and maybe even talked to them on the phone, you should never go meet someone in person without first talking to a parent of guardian. If you do decide to meet up with someone, make sure it is in a public place with lots of people. Maybe even agree to both bring a friend or parent along.
- Don't click on links if you don't know where they go! Stick to sites that you know are safe.
- Remember to have fun but stay alert. If something feels out of the ordinary or suspicious, tell a parent or guardian right away.
